Painting for me is my way of sharing the beautiful landscape around us. My inspiration comes from the quality of light and shadows which often becomes the main impulse behind the painting. I have been painting for many years and still feel like I am just learning. I sometimes paint with oils, but find I can do everything with pastel that I can do with oil paint. The vibrant colors are wonderful to work with and when applied lightly they are as transparent as oils and they have a brilliance of color unrivaled by any other medium as they are almost pure pigment.
I also work with silk dyes. I make silk scarves and silk paintings because of the vibrancy and richness of color that can be achieved without sacrificing any of the fabric’s natural softness and grace. The pigment is infused in the very fibers of the silk, rather than laid on top of the painting surface. This allows the natural sheen and sparkle of this beautiful material to continue to shine. The subtle shine adds a special quality of depth to the image. This is an ancient art form, and if properly cared for, a painting may last indefinitely.
